Although users are expected to have read the rules, many often overlook them. Before jumping to administrative action, prioritize educating the user whenever appropriate. Furthermore, always consider how your communication reflects on the team; you are expected to lead by example at all times.
When warnings are insufficient, further intervention becomes necessary. Once a user is aware that their actions are prohibited, you must select a path forward based on the severity of the disruption. Consequences can range from mutes to temporary bans, up to permanent removal.
We prefer a light touch, but we do not tolerate bad actors. If a user’s history shows a refusal to follow rules, or if they commit a single severe violation, they have shown they do not intend to be a positive member of this community thus we can opt to remove them completely.
We enforce all our rules, though not all violations have the same level of impact. Minor issues, like using the wrong channel, overusing emojis, or promoting products, are handled differently from serious offenses such as hate speech, doxxing, or sharing harmful links. Treat these as general guidelines as a key reference point when taking moderation actions.
It is difficult to keep pointers in mind for a very long period of time, to ensure we remain fair in all our moderation decisions we should disregard moderation actions that are over 3 months old.
For low-severity violations, we should start with the escalation pathway, beginning with a warning to the user. Further escalation to a mute or ban may be warranted if any of the following occurs:
the violation is repeated
the user has received a warning within the past three months
the user fails to comply.
Warn / 1h mute → 1d or 3d mute → 7d days → Ban
These violations are more serious and could justify a mute or ban, depending on the content and context.
1d or 3d mute → 7d days mute → Ban
When a user blatantly disregards our rules, it’s reasonable to assume they acted knowingly and expected a permanent ban. Such violations should lead to a permanent ban and may also warrant a report to Discord Trust & Safety.
